Sohyun Shim made her debut after qualifying for the Kumho Prodigy Recital at the age of 14.

She began her piano studies at the age of 5 and won numerous competitions and awards before and after her big performance at Kumho Art Hall.  Before graduating from Seoul Arts High School in 2017, she performed the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Gangnam Symphony Orchestra by placing first in their Third Annual Youth Music Competition. She then began her undergraduate studies at Seoul National University under the guidance of Professors Hee Sung Joo and later Ick Choo Moon. In her sophomore year of university, Sohyun returned to her debut stage at Kumho Art Hall to perform in the Kumho Young Artist Concert. Having found success domestically, Sohyun expanded her horizons abroad, where she received an Honorable Mention, and masterclass from Professor Boris Berman, at the International Taipei Maestro Piano Festival, and performed with the Orchestra del Music Fest Perugia in Italy. 

Although COVID-19 halted the international music scene, she continued her career in Korea by performing in a joint recital, playing with the Seoul Orchestra, and participating in her professor’s special project where she was able to perform a part of Rachmaninoff’s étude series.

After graduating from Seoul National University, cum laude, Sohyun received a full scholarship to pursue her Master’s degree at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music under Professor Norman Krieger. She currently serves as an associate instructor and dedicates her time between studying, practicing, and teaching.Sohyun is driven and enthusiastic about becoming the best musician she can be, and is currently preparing to perform the Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2 at the Jacobs School of Music.
